Why Sadio Mane Turned Down Man United Transfer

Sadio Mane had the option to join Manchester United before he signed for Liverpool, but the former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal’s reign could have turned out differently had Ed Woodward delivered him the majority of his A-list transfer targets. The legendary Dutch coach revealed in an interview with FourFourTwo earlier this week that deals fell through or failed to materialise for 10 star player who would have helped kick-start his failed Old Trafford revolution. Although Van Gaal was permitted to spend heavily on Anthony Martial and Angel Di Maria, but the likes of Sadio Mane slipped through his grasp.

The Senegal international eventually signed for Liverpool from Southampton and has since cemented his reputation as one of world football’s elite forwards and played a central role in the success enjoyed by the Reds under Jurgen Klopp. According to ESPN, however, Woodward’s supposed failure to sign Mane had nothing to do with the transfer fee United were prepared to pay.

Instead, Mane had no desire to play for Van Gaal due to his supposed negative tactics and possession-based football style. The 28-year-old has thrived as part of Klopp’s relentless, counter-pressing and counter-attacking side.

By contrast, Van Gaal’s regin at Old Trafford was characterised by a series of dull, listless matches, particularly at home, with his side infamously going 11 matches without scoring a first half goal in front of their own fans. ESPN claims United lost control over their recruitment strategy during Van Gaal’s tenure which culminated in his acrimonious departure in the immediate aftermath of an FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace.

Van Gaal is also said to have lined up Netherlands international Jasper Cillessen as a replacement for David de Gea before the Spanish goalkeeper’s proposed move to Real Madrid fell through as a consequence of a faulty fax machine. Meanwhile: Manchester United make approach to sign Sandro Tonali from Brescia.
