Iga świątek Shine brightly At Roland Garros

Iga świątek reacts after a straight set - French Open
Top seed and 2018 champion Simona Halep was sent crashing out of Roland Garros on Sunday when Polish teenager Iga Swiatek stormed to a shock 6-1, 6-2 victory to reach the quarter-finals.

Swiatek, just 19 and ranked 54 in the world, will take on Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan for a place in the semi-finals, after she also pulled a massive upset by beating Dutch fifth seed Kiki Bertens. With two matches completed in the fourth round, there are only four seeds left in the women’s draw - No.3 Elina Svitolina, No.4 Sofia Kenin, No.7 Petra Kvitova and No.30 Ons Jabeur.

Halep’s elimination from the tournament means Ash Barty cannot be surpassed for world number one this year. The Aussie will finish the year on top of the world rankings despite not playing since February. Barty has been world No.1 since September 9, 2019. She will become the 11th woman in tennis history to have been world No.1 for more than 50 weeks later this year.

The record for an active player is Serena Williams (319 weeks), followed by Simona Halep (64 weeks). The rankings were frozen between March 23 and August 9 of this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, while players are currently able to carry over their points won at tournaments longer than 12 months ago.
